Download java from
http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp
where you select jdk-1_5_0_11-linux-i586.bin or jdk-1_5_0_11-linux-amd64.bin depending on your distribution.

aptitude install libxerces2-java latex-ucs
Install MeCat
Download mecat_1.4.5-1_all.deb into a directory and execute the following command:
dpkg -i mecat_1.4.5-1_all.deb
